APLDWA MEMBERSHIP

The Association of Professional Landscape Designers, APLD, is an international non-profit organization dedicated to establishing the highest standards for the landscape design profession. The Washington Chapter (APLDWA) is the oldest chapter in the nation, having formed in 2000.

MEMBER BENEFITS

National Certification

  • APLD’s certification program offers professional recognition to landscape designers based on established standards of excellence, the only landscape design certification program in the United States. For more information: http://apld.org/?p=certification

Professional Growth

  • Events – approximately 12 local events a year offering professional growth, networking, and CEUs.
  • National and WA chapter educational webinars.
  • The Designer , the APLD national quarterly publication. Monthly National and Washington Chapter newsletters.
  • Discounted fee to the International Landscape Design Conference.
  • Eligibility to enter APLD’s International Landscape Design Awards competition for both professional and student members.

Networking

  • Chapter Members Only Yahoo Group chat room, a great resource for topics of interest.

Business & Legislative Advocacy

  • Advocacy–Monitor and update members on pertinent national and state legislative and regulatory changes, which can affect our ‘right to practice’ landscape design.
  • Sample proposals, contracts and documents, customized for individual businesses.
  • WA Chapter informs members about local programs, i.e. Green Factor, Stormwater Management Codes, Low Impact Development (LID) methods of practice.

Professional Visibility

  • Listing in the APLDWA website Find a Designer Directory for Professional members.
  • Individual member/company page on both national and chapter APLD websites.
  • Recognition of member accomplishments, i.e. NWFGS participation, awards, activities, publications.
  • APLD professional membership. Permitted use of APLD logo on print and website material.

Certified members may utilize the APLD acronym following their name in all personal, professional marketing material.

Renewal Periods:

APLD offers two renewal periods of either January 1 – December 31 or July 1 – June 30. New members do not receive a prorated amount as applications received from October 1 – December 31 will be included in the January 1 – December 31 membership cycle and applications received from April 1 – June 30 will be included in the July 1 – June 30 membership cycle.


APLD MEMBERSHIP CATEGORIES

In an effort to raise the level of professionalism within the APLD and differentiate ourselves as landscape designers, new membership levels were introduced at the beginning of 2016. The membership levels and the requirements for each are as follows:

PROFESSIONAL MEMBERSHIP LEVELS:

Certified +

$340.00 plus $150.00 for recertification every three years, plus $35 for Chapter Dues.

  • A Landscape Designer who engages in the practice of landscape design for monetary compensation and has been certified by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.
  • Must join and meet all requirements as a Professional member before applying for Certified member level.
  • Must submit a portfolio of work experience.
  • Must adhere to a ‘Standards of Practice’ document.
  • CEU Requirement ‐ 30 CEU’s every three years, with the following required field of study:
    • - Minimum of 5 CEU’s in the field(s) of Sustainability Practices (water budgeting, storm water management, low impact development, rain gardens, native plants, SITES/Landscape for Life training etc.)

*Permanently Certified members: $0, plus $35 for Chapter Dues.

Professional +

2017 Dues Amount $290 plus $35 for Chapter Dues. Graduated dues structured over 3 years to certified level dues of $340.00, plus Chapter Dues.

  • A Landscape Designer who engages in the practice of landscape design for monetary compensation.
    • Education Requirement(s):
      - Associate Degree (or higher) in landscape design based education from an accredited institution. Education must be verified with an official transcript.
    • Experience Requirement(s):
      - 3 years or more of professional Landscape Design experience. Must submit proof of experience or professional business status, i.e. proof of liability insurance, business license, IRS letter of determination, letter of incorporation, sales tax certificate, tax return, certificate of insurance, affidavit from employer, etc.
  • OR
    • Education/Experience Combination Requirement (in lieu of education and experience requirements)
    • - Form required to outline combination of education and experience for review and approval, including reference letters, certificates, transcripts, etc.
  • Strive to adhere to APLD’s Standards of Practice document.
  • CEU Requirement – 30 CEU’s every three years.

Associate +

2017 Dues Amount $290 plus $35 for Chapter Dues

  • A Landscape Designer who engages in the practice of landscape design for monetary compensation and does not meet the requirements for Professional level membership.
    • Education Requirement(s):
      - Associate Degree (or higher) in landscape design based education from an accredited institution. Education must be verified with an official transcript.
    • Experience Requirement(s):
      - Less than 3 years of professional Landscape Design experience.
      - Must submit proof of experience or professional business status, i.e. proof of liability insurance, business license, IRS letter of determination, letter of incorporation, sales tax certificate, tax return, certificate of insurance, affidavit from employer, etc.
  • OR
    • Education/Experience Combination Requirement (in lieu of education and experience requirements listed above)
    • - Form required to outline combination of education and experience for review and approval, including reference letters, certificates, transcripts, etc.

  • CEU Requirement ‐ 15 CEU’s every three (3) years.
  • Strive to adhere to APLD’s Standards of Practice document.
  • Limit of three (3) years at this level.

Allied +

2017 Dues Amount $340 plus $35 for Chapter Dues

  • Those individuals practicing in related and associated fields: ornamental horticulture, public and private garden/estate management, garden writing/publishing/photography, architecture, interior design, lighting design, and green industry suppliers such as growers, nurseries, stone-yards, landscape contractors, etc.
  • There are no restrictions or educational requirements to join.

GENERAL MEMBERSHIP LEVELS:

Student +

2017 Dues Amount $55 plus $20 for Chapter Dues

  • Student members must be actively enrolled in a landscape design, landscape architecture, or horticulture program. A student member may not practice landscape design unless it is part of a student internship related to their design program.
  • Student members must send proof of enrollment (i.e. transcript) yearly in a degreed or certificate program from an accredited institution related to landscape design.
  • Student membership is limited to five years.

Fellow +

$340.00, plus $150.00 for recertification every three years, plus $35 Chapter Dues.

  • An exceptional landscape designer who has made a significant contribution to the profession and the Association and has been voted upon by the Board of Directors to receive this honor.
  • Must meet all requirements as a Certified member.

Retired +

$90, plus $35 Chapter Dues.

  • A member who is no longer working as a landscape designer.
  • The member maintains their professional designation upon retirement (i.e. Fellow, Certified, etc.)
  • No CEU requirement.

Sponsorship Rates vary between each level

  • Those companies which participate in APLD’s sponsorship program at the bronze, silver, gold or platinum level.
